Friends and The Office are beloved classics that have left a lasting impression on pop culture. Each show features a group of friends who work together or are connected somehow. While the settings and premises of the two shows are different, there are certainly some similarities between the characters. 

While The Office plots center around the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees, a fictional paper company based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Friends’ basic plot is about Six friends in their twenties trying to navigate love, work, and life in New York City.

We won’t be covering every character in this article as there are no similarities between all of them. Instead, we’ll focus only on the characters that have significant similarities.

The Office vs. Friends: A Character Comparison

Janice Hosenstein – Jan Levinson

Jan and Janice share many similarities beyond their names, as they are both former girlfriends who struggled to let go of their past relationships. These determined and stubborn women also possess obsessive personalities, often injuring their friends and acquaintances wrongfully. Jan and Janice are infamous in their respective shows for their unlikeable nature. Janice manipulates Chandler into a relationship, while Jan controls Michael and even shows up unexpectedly. Both characters possess a strong will and do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Despite their erratic behavior, they are both intelligent women who eventually become mothers.

Mr. Heckles – Creed Bratton

Mr. Heckles, despite his brief appearance on the show, leaves a lasting impression as a peculiar and enigmatic character. He is well-known for his repeated requests to keep the noise down in the apartment, but he also says strange and nonsensical things, such as claiming ownership of Paolo’s cat. 

Similarly, Creed from The Office is known for his eccentric behavior, often making absurd allegations and telling bizarre stories that leave his coworkers perplexed and uncomfortable. Both characters have an air of unpredictability and an unconventional way of communicating, which adds to their mysterious nature and makes them stand out.

Mr. Heckles - Creed 

Chandler Bing – Jim Halpert

Jim Halpert is another main character in “The Office.” Jim is the charming salesman who spends most of his time playing pranks on his coworker Dwight Schrute. His counterpart in “Friends” would be Chandler Bing. Chandler is known for his sarcastic sense of humor and his love of making jokes. Jim and Chandler are quick-witted and often use humor as a defense mechanism.

Phoebe Buffay – Erin Hannon

Erin and Phoebe share a plethora of similarities, despite having difficult childhoods. They both exhibit vivacious and cheerful personalities, making them some of the most amicable individuals in their social circles. However, don’t let their sweet demeanor fool you, as they both have a few tricks up their sleeves that they only reveal when needed. 

Despite their tumultuous upbringing, Phoebe and Erin maintain an optimistic outlook on life, reflected in their carefree and outgoing nature. Their past experiences have made them tough and resourceful, as they know how to handle challenging situations and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty when necessary. Moreover, they are fiercely loyal friends who will go above and beyond to help those they hold dear.

Rachel Green – Kelly Kapoor

Throughout their series, Kelly and Rachel shared similar personality traits and a keen interest in the fashion and entertainment industries. Despite their occasional snarky and self-centered behavior, they possessed softer sides and harbored insecurities.

Although both characters had moments of forgetfulness, they were highly driven and energetic. Kelly, like Rachel, held a deep passion for fashion and entertainment. Kelly even offered to assist Pam with her wardrobe, reminiscent of Rachel’s eagerness to help her friends. Their occasional bratty conduct was another trait they had in common, as both were known for complaining about their jobs and throwing tantrums when things didn’t go their way.

Ross Geller – Dwight Schrute

Dwight Schrute is the eccentric and overzealous salesman at Dunder Mifflin who takes his job very seriously. His counterpart in “Friends” would be Ross Geller. Ross is a paleontologist who is equally obsessive about his work. Dwight and Ross are quirky characters fiercely loyal to their friends.
