The Little Mermaid Director on Possibility of Live-Action Sequel

The Little Mermaid Sequel

In an interview with Total Film, Rob Marshall, the director of the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s 1989 classic, The Little Mermaid, discussed the possibility of a sequel to the movie.

The film, which stars Halle Bailey and is set to hit theaters on May 26, has yet to be released, but Marshall expressed confidence in its success and indicated that a second film could be made if the first one performs well at the box office.

While there have been prequels and sequels to the animated version of the film, they were intended for the home video market. Marshall believes the classic story has many characters and exciting stories that could be explored further.

Still, the decision to move forward with a sequel would depend on the reception of the first movie. He expressed optimism that there is always an opportunity to find new stories within existing ones.

In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marshall shared his vision for a modern version of the story. He described Ariel’s journey as epic and highlighted the character’s quest to find her true self. In the film, he emphasized the importance of passion and the need for joy. Marshall also discussed breaking down barriers, particularly the wall separating the human and underwater worlds.
